How do you know when a loved one should no longer drive?  In Arizona, once a driver reaches age 60, their license will only be valid for five years. They’ll need to renew their license in person at their local MVD office and may need to complete the following items: an updated vision test, a new photo for the license, and a written test.

Re-Examination of Driving Ability – At any time, a family member, physical or emergency medical technician, or peace officer may recommend a re-examination of a person’s driving skills based on the driver’s physical or mental condition or driving record. To make such a request, use the re-examination request form. Other times, information in a driver’s license renewal application or on their driving record may prompt a re-examination.  The re-examination involves the immediate evaluation of an individual by a MVD Driver Safety hearing officer and consists of an interview and possibly a vision test, a written test, and/or a driving test. Based on the re-examination, the hearing officer will decide if any action should be taken, such as restrictions, probation, suspension or revocation.

A Restricted Driver License – Sometimes, a physical or mental condition can impair a driver’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, such as poor vision or an age-related decline in coordination and flexibility or cognitive skills like memory. Please note that Arizona MVD requires that it be notified of any medical condition (newly diagnosed or worsening of an existing condition) that might hinder safe driving.
